The war over who saves the bees

Fieldnotes from the treatment-free schism
Almost everything about keeping bees changed when a reddish mite the size of a poppy seed learned to ride the Western honey bee. It split the hobby into two moral camps that agree on the enemy and on almost nothing else, and the argument between them is really an argument about who is supposed to save the bees, the beekeeper or the bee.[1]

01The poppy seed that ate the hobby

Varroa destructor began as a parasite of the Asian honey bee and then jumped, sometime in the twentieth century, onto the Western honey bee that most of the world keeps.[1] It reached the continental United States in 1987, and it now lives on nearly every continent where bees are kept.[1] The mite clamps onto a bee and feeds on its fat body, the organ that runs immunity and detoxification, and as it feeds it injects a payload of viruses, above all the deformed wing virus that leaves emerging bees with the crumpled, useless stubs that are the visible signature of a dying colony.[1] Left alone, a colony in a temperate climate usually collapses within two or three years, because the mites multiply through the summer and then concentrate in the last brood of autumn.[1] Every faction in modern beekeeping formed in the shadow of this one animal.[1]

02Two kinds of good beekeeper

Ask what earns respect in a bee club and you will get two different answers, depending on whose table you sit at. In the conventional camp, status comes from keeping colonies alive and productive through disciplined management, from counting mites on a schedule and acting on the number, an approach the extension services call integrated pest management.[9] In the treatment-free camp, status comes from the opposite restraint, from breeding bees that survive on their own and refusing to reach for a chemical at all, letting selection rather than the keeper solve the problem.[2] The moral charge runs both ways. One side hears perpetual treatment as an unnatural treadmill that never ends, and the other hears deliberate non-treatment as a way of breeding mites and handing them to the neighbors.[10]

03A glossary for the mite wars

The factions speak a dense shared dialect, and following the fight means learning a little of it. A mite bomb is a heavily infested colony that collapses and sends its surviving bees drifting into nearby hives, exporting its mites in the process.[10] The Bond method, named with grim humor for the license to kill, means letting susceptible colonies die and breeding only from the survivors.[10] Keepers measure infestation with an alcohol wash or a gentler sugar roll, counting mites per hundred bees, and the extension threshold for action sits at roughly two or three.[9] Those who do treat rotate through a small pharmacy of miticides, the synthetic amitraz sold as Apivar, oxalic acid dribbled or vaporized when the hive is broodless, and formic acid, the one agent that soaks through the wax cap to reach mites on developing brood.[9] The prize everyone wants is a set of inherited traits, chief among them varroa-sensitive hygiene, the habit by which workers sniff out and tear open infested cells before the mites inside can breed.[7]

04Seeley’s forest and the Darwinian dream

The treatment-free movement borrows much of its intellectual dignity from a stand of trees near Ithaca, New York. The Cornell biologist Thomas Seeley has tracked wild honey bee colonies in the Arnot Forest for decades, and when varroa swept through in the early 1990s those wild colonies crashed and then, remarkably, came back, rebuilding to roughly their old density by the early 2000s with no help and no chemicals.[3] Genetic comparison of bees sampled decades apart showed a real adaptive shift and a severe bottleneck, as if the forest had been repopulated from only a few surviving queens.[3] Seeley turned the lesson into a program he calls Darwinian beekeeping, a set of principles for keeping bees more like wild ones, in smaller nests spaced well apart, bred from local survivors and left largely alone.[2] He is careful rather than zealous about it, and he frames the wild bees’ success as the product of a brutal filter, constant swarming and frequent death, that few hobbyists could actually stomach.[4]

05Randy Oliver, apostate to both churches

The most quoted skeptic of treatment-free culture is not a chemical salesman but a commercial beekeeper who shares its ultimate goal. Randy Oliver, who publishes his own field trials, wants resistant bees as much as anyone, and he points out that resistance plainly exists in the world already, in the Asian honey bee, in feral survivors, and in the bred lines that carry varroa-sensitive hygiene.[5][8] His quarrel is with the movement’s tone and its shortcuts. He argues that commercial keepers copy financial success rather than rhetoric, and that self-righteous non-treatment does the cause of resistant bees no favors.[5] He and university researchers also spent years testing the movement’s most cherished shortcut, the theory that forcing bees onto smaller comb cells would suppress mites, and the controlled trials did not bear it out.[6]

06Bomb versus Bond

The sharpest version of the fight is not about evidence at all but about the fence line. Mainstream apiculturists and the coalition of groups that publishes the standard varroa guidance warn that an unmanaged, collapsing hive becomes a reservoir that seeds the whole neighborhood, so that one keeper’s principled restraint can read as another keeper’s ruined season.[10] Treatment-free defenders answer that endless chemistry only buys time, and they can point to real proof that resistance can be bred rather than purchased. A federally developed line selected for hygienic behavior survived a winter without any fall treatment at a rate of about sixty-two percent, against three percent for standard stock, and carried lighter virus loads besides.[7] Both camps, pressed, want the same destination, a bee that handles the mite on its own.[10] They divide over the road, and over who is allowed to absorb the losses along the way.[10]
