Reading the alphabet off a rock
§1A discipline of hard surfaces
An inscription is writing made to last, and epigraphy is its study.[1] The field is easy to confuse with two neighbors. Paleography reads handwriting on soft, perishable media, ink laid on papyrus or parchment, and follows how scripts changed under a moving pen.[1] Philology studies language itself, its grammar and transmission and meaning, on any medium at all.[1] The epigrapher works on the durable stuff and has to be part archaeologist, part editor, and part historian at once, because the text is also an object, with a findspot, a material, and a scatter of tool-marks that carry as much information as the words.[1]
§2The bracket is the argument
Reading a worn inscription is less like transcription than like testimony under oath, where the editor must show exactly where the stone stops and the guess begins.[2] The tool for that is a system of brackets that a handful of scholars agreed on at a 1931 meeting in Leiden and published the next year, and it is still the working grammar of the field.[2] Square brackets hold letters that are lost and have been supplied by a modern conjecture. Round brackets expand an abbreviation, so a stone that reads COS becomes co(n)s(ul). Angle brackets add letters the ancient cutter wrongly left out, and double square brackets flag an erasure made in antiquity, a name chiselled away in disgrace but still faintly there.[2] A single dot under a letter is the quietest mark of all, and it means the editor can see something but will not swear to it.[2] The whole apparatus exists to keep one boundary visible, the line between the stone and the scholar, and that boundary is exactly what tonight’s controversy puts under strain.[2]
An epigrapher without a date is only half-armed, and the letters themselves offer one. The shape of a letter drifts over centuries and across regions, so that a Greek sigma cut with three bars belongs to a different world than one cut with four, and paleographic dating reads age from that shape, imprecisely and, used alone, a little circularly.[1] Names help more. By tracking the same named people across many inscriptions, a method called prosopography, a scholar can pin a text to a career, a family, a decade.[1] All of it is stored in vast reference collections that give the discipline its spine, the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum for Latin and the Inscriptiones Graecae for Greek, with parallel corpora for the Semitic, South Arabian, Maya, and Indian scripts.[1]
§3The stones that unlocked others
A few inscriptions matter less for what they say than for what they opened. High on a cliff in western Iran, Darius the Great left the same royal boast in three languages, and in the nineteenth century that repetition became the key that cracked cuneiform.[3] The Rosetta Stone did the same favor for Egyptian hieroglyphs.[1] Others are monuments of sheer content, like the first-person account of his own reign that Augustus left behind, best preserved as a text copied onto a temple wall at Ankara, or the law code cut into a wall at Gortyn on Crete, written in lines that reverse direction like a plough turning at the end of a furrow, which preserves the everyday law of a Greek city.[1]
§4A curse read from a folded scrap of lead
In December 2019 a team sifting the discarded dirt from a 1980s dig on Mount Ebal, in the West Bank, rinsed off what looked at first like a small folded tab of lead, about two centimeters square.[4] Three years later, at a press conference in a Houston library, the excavator Scott Stripling and two epigraphers announced that it carried one of the oldest Hebrew inscriptions ever found.[4] They could not unfold it without destroying it, so they had it scanned by tomography, the layered X-ray imaging a hospital uses, at a laboratory in Prague, and read the letters off the scan.[4] The reading was sensational, a formulaic curse with the word for cursed repeated in a tight symmetrical pattern and the divine name at its center, on an object they dated to around 1200 BCE, centuries earlier than the earliest Hebrew writing then known.[4] The peer-reviewed paper followed in 2023.[5] Even inside the team the reading was not unanimous, and it rested on the three-letter form of the divine name rather than the full four-letter one.[4]
§5Letters, or the marks a hillside leaves
The objection came fast, and from senior people. Christopher Rollston, who reads early alphabetic scripts for a living, noted that the actual scan images were not shown at the press conference, and that the object had come from a spoil heap rather than a controlled, datable layer of earth.[7] When the images did appear, the criticism sharpened, and several scholars said the scan showed no legible writing at all, only the natural pits and scratches that any old piece of lead accumulates.[8] A formal refutation published in the same journal argued that the marks form no coherent lines of text, that some of the proposed spellings would be anachronistic for the second millennium BCE, and that the one claim the evidence really supports is that this is a very old, small, folded piece of lead.[9]
A folded scrap of lead had become a mirror, and each expert seemed to read in it the letters they had already believed were there.
The discovery team has not backed down. They argue that the incisions are deliberate and patterned, that the alternatives on offer, a fishing weight or a random scratch, do not fit the object, and that the images had leaked online, which is why they went public before the paper was ready.[6]
The heat around one small object makes sense only against the field’s recent history, because epigraphy has been burned again and again by inscriptions that arrive without a findspot. A limestone box said to name the brother of Jesus led to a years-long Israeli forgery trial that ended in acquittal without ever settling whether the inscription was genuine.[11] In 2020 an investigation concluded that all sixteen of one American museum’s Dead Sea Scroll fragments were modern fakes.[10] So when a spectacular text surfaces from a dump pile, the discipline’s first instinct is not wonder but the Leiden bracket, the demand to show, letter by letter, where the stone ends and the reader begins.[2]
