The grave that may not be a grave
Thirty meters underground, in a chamber reachable only by a chute the width of a human head, lie the scattered bones of at least fifteen individuals of a species that is not us. Their brains were a third the size of yours. In 2023 the team that found them announced that these creatures carried their dead into the dark, dug pits, and scratched marks on the walls. If true, it moves the origin of deliberate burial back more than a hundred thousand years and hands symbolic thought to a hominin no one thought capable of it. The claim detonated inside paleoanthropology, and the crater is still smoking.
The field in brief
Paleoanthropology reconstructs how humans became human from fragments: bones, teeth, sediment, and the marks left on all three. It rarely gets to watch behavior. It infers behavior from context, and the discipline of reading that context is where this fight lives.
Four ideas carry the argument. Stratigraphy is the reading of sediment layers to order events in time, the way a stack of pages records which was set down first. Taphonomy is the study of everything that happens to a body between death and discovery, the water, scavengers, and slumping sediment that move and break bones with no mind behind them. Archaeothanatology is the finer craft of reconstructing how the dead were treated from the exact spatial arrangement of bones and whether their joints are still articulated, still in anatomical connection. And a burial, in the technical sense the fight demands, is not simply a body underground; it is a body placed in a pit dug for it, a feature that must be shown to cut through older sediment.[2]
That last number is the provocation. The species had an endocranial volume closer to a chimpanzee's than to ours, yet the deposits date to roughly 241,000 to 335,000 years ago, overlapping the dawn of our own kind.[1] The behaviors on trial, tending the dead and marking a wall, are the ones the field has long treated as signatures of a large, symbolic mind.

The fight
In June 2023 Lee Berger of the University of the Witwatersrand, with John Hawks of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Princeton anthropologist Agustín Fuentes, posted three linked papers to the preprint server bioRxiv and submitted them to the journal eLife.[8] One reported deliberate burials in the Dinaledi and Hill Antechamber chambers. A second reported cross-hatched engravings on a cave wall.[4] A third argued the two together amounted to meaning-making, culture in a creature that should not have had it.[6] Five days after the reviews went public, Netflix released Unknown: Cave of Bones, which told the burial story to millions as settled discovery.[8]
Then the reviews landed, and they were brutal. eLife runs an unusual open model in which referee reports are published alongside the paper. The referees were not persuaded. One judged that a paper did not meet the standards of the field.[8] A reviewer of the burial paper set the bar the whole dispute now turns on: the starting point of any discussion of deliberate burial has to be the demonstration of a pit, and, he wrote, I don't see it here.[2] On the companion paper, a referee stated flatly that the evidence did not support the claim that Homo naledi engaged in burial practices or symbolic expression through wall engravings.[3]
The criticism hardened into a formal rebuttal. María Martinón-Torres, director of Spain's National Research Center on Human Evolution, with Diego Garate, the geochronologist Andy Herries of La Trobe University, and Michael Petraglia of Griffith University, published a paper in the Journal of Human Evolution titled, without hedging, that there was no scientific evidence the species buried its dead or made rock art.[5] Their argument was not that a small brain forbids the behavior. It was that ordinary, mindless processes had not been ruled out: a natural death trap, water washing bones into low spots, carnivores rearranging them, sediment slumping into the shapes of graves.[7] The marks on the wall, they added, had not even been shown to be human-made, let alone made by naledi.[7]
Underneath the science ran a quarrel about conduct. Herries put it sharply: he had no issue with the idea that a non-sapiens species disposed of its dead, but he expected robust evidence before scientists went on massive media campaigns.[8] The complaint was that a preprint, a Netflix special, and a National Geographic cover had reached the public before peer review reached the papers. Hawks defended the sequence as transparency, not evasion, arguing the open model let scientists and the public weigh in and made the work stronger.[11]
The stakes were plain on both sides. For the Rising Star team, a career of extraordinary claims about naledi rode on this one holding. For the critics, a method was at risk: if a spectacular conclusion could outrun its evidence through a documentary, the field's slow machinery of proof lost its authority. Nobody was arguing about a small point. They were arguing about what counts as knowing.
Then the ground shifted. The team spent two years rebuilding the burial paper into a document of more than 150 pages, adding a reconstruction of how each body decomposed and was covered, sediment analysis it said showed no water transport, and fossils still in anatomical connection, a foot and ankle attached to a leg.[10] In 2025 one of the original skeptics reversed: the reviewer now judged that the authors provided sufficient evidence for repeated and patterned deliberate burials.[9] In September 2025 the burial paper cleared review and became a version of record in eLife, concluding the species buried its dead roughly 240,000 years ago.[1] A dissenting referee still would not sign on, insisting that science is about replication and that an independent team should redo the analysis.[9]
What the fight reveals
The dispute exposes how much of paleoanthropology is inference under a single team's control. Only one group has been down the chute. The bones cannot be re-excavated without being disturbed, so the field's usual remedy, someone else checking the site, is nearly impossible here. That is why the dissenting reviewer's demand for replication is both reasonable and, for now, unmeetable, and it is the single most honest thing anyone has said in the affair.[9]
On the narrower factual question, the evidence has moved. The burial claim, in its restricted sense of bodies deliberately placed and covered, survived two rounds of hostile review, converted an original skeptic, and now stands as a peer-reviewed publication with articulated skeletons and sediment analysis behind it.[1][9] That is not the same as consensus, and the demand for an independent look remains unanswered. But the case is materially stronger than the raw 2023 preprint that critics rightly savaged.
The engraving claim has not traveled as well. The marks remain undated and unproven as deliberate, and the referees who rejected the symbolic reading have not been answered the way the burial referees were.[3] The prudent reading splits the bundle the team sold as a unit: mortuary behavior is plausibly established, symbolic engraving is not. Whether a hominin with a chimpanzee-sized brain also made meaning on a wall is the part that is genuinely unresolved, and the evidence does not yet decide it.
