The Two-Millimetre Rebellion

Two Millimetres Too Narrow

On a kitchen table somewhere in Britain, a modeller is soldering lengths of rail onto copper-clad sleepers by hand, because the track width he insists on cannot be bought ready-made in any shop.[9] He belongs to the finescale wing of 4mm railway modelling, the hobbyists who reject the standard commercial track for being almost two millimetres too narrow and then build the correct width themselves.[7] Their world runs on societies, printed handbooks, mail-order component stores and annual exhibitions, and it is unusually candid about its own compromises.[4] In 1975 the strictest camp split in two, not over the standard itself but over who was allowed to sell the parts that made it possible, and the schism is remarkable because it later healed.[1]

The world

The trouble began with a shortcut taken in the 1920s. British model makers fitted the mechanisms of the smaller Continental HO scale into models of British trains, then kept the HO track that came with them rather than tooling up new track to match.[7] The result is the standard most British train sets still use, called OO, in which the models are built to four millimetres to the foot but run on rails 16.5mm apart.[6] Scaled up, that gap works out at about 4 ft 1½ in, where the real thing is 4 ft 8½ in, so the track sits roughly two millimetres too narrow beneath otherwise careful models.[7]

Finescale is the answer, and it climbs in steps. In 1955 a group founded the Eighteen Millimetre Gauge Society to lay track at a corrected width, a standard now known as EM and settled at 18.2mm.[5] A stricter faction went all the way to the exact figure, 18.83mm, the true scale equivalent of full-size track, and named it Protofour, or P4.[6] The word finescale itself covers this whole ladder of fidelity rather than any single rung on it.[7]

Choosing the correct gauge commits you to a great deal of hand work, and that labour is the community’s real currency. Ready-made track and factory wheels will not do, so the pointwork and plain track are built by hand and the wheels on every locomotive and wagon are reprofiled or swapped for finer ones.[9] The reward is a model that sits and runs true, but the tolerances are tight, and a small imperfection that a coarse train set would ride straight over will put a finescale locomotive on the floor.[9] Members describe finescale less as a technique than as a disposition, in the society’s own words “an attitude to modelling, in which models should be as realistic and as accurate as possible”.[4]

Authenticity here is not a mood but a measurement, and the correct gauge has to be built by hand, one soldered joint at a time.

The scene keeps a full civic life for its size. The EM Gauge Society dates to 1955 and runs spring and autumn exhibitions, while the Scalefour Society, which now carries the P4 standard, publishes a printed magazine five times a year, operates a mail-order component store and holds its own exhibition, Scaleforum, in late September.[5][4] Above it all sits a shared exemplar, the Pendon Museum in Oxfordshire, begun in 1954 by an Australian named Roye England to model the vanishing thatched villages of the Vale of White Horse in fine 4mm scale.[8] Its cottages can take hundreds of hours each, and it stands in the hobby the way a cathedral stands in a diocese, a thing few could match and everyone measures against.[8]

The schism

By the society’s own record, the exact standard has a precise birthday. A modeller named Joe Brook Smith proposed working to exact-scale gauges in 1964, a colleague, Malcolm Cross, coined the name Protofour, and in August 1966 a body called the Model Railway Study Group set the standards out in the pages of the magazine Model Railway News.[6] A thirteen-part series in another modelling magazine from January 1967, in the community’s phrase, “got P4 on the move”.[3]

In March 1969 the enthusiasts formed the Protofour Society to support the new standard.[2] There was a catch built into it. The components needed to work in P4 were supplied through a single controlled channel, sold under the trade name Studiolith, with the founding group keeping quality control in its own hands.[1]

The arrangement broke on its own success. Demand for the parts outran what the supplier could produce, the controlled channel could not keep pace, and members grew frustrated at both the shortages and the central grip on supply.[1]

The break came in September 1975. A new body, the Scalefour Society, formed as a breakaway to escape those constraints while leaving the dimensional standard itself completely unchanged.[1] For a dozen years the same small community ran two rival societies devoted to the identical 18.83mm ideal, one built around the original supply arrangement and one around member ownership of it.[3]

What is unusual is the ending. The controlled supplier faded, its role passing to other traders in the early 1980s, and in 1987 the older Protofour Society merged into the newer Scalefour Society, keeping the Scalefour name.[3][2] Rare among hobby schisms, this one closed rather than hardening into two permanent camps, and the 18.83mm standard the two sides had never actually disagreed about carried on under a single roof.[2]

What it reveals

The whole community is organised around a refusal of two millimetres. Everything downstream, the handbuilt track, the reprofiled wheels, the societies and the exhibitions, follows from a decision that a gauge scaling to 4 ft 1½ in is not good enough when the prototype is 4 ft 8½ in.[7] Authenticity here is not a mood but a measurement, and status flows to the member who accepts the harder, exact figure and puts in the labour it demands.[9]

The 1975 split follows a pattern that will look familiar to anyone who has watched a shared technical standard governed by a single steward. When the people who define a standard also control the only supply of the parts needed to use it, scarcity and central control become the same grievance, and the natural remedy is a breakaway body owned by its users.[1] An open standard drifts toward open, member-run governance of the things that make it usable.[2]

The tempting analogy is the software fork, where a project splits over a corporate steward and one side usually wins while the other withers. It breaks here in two places. The rival factions never disagreed about the doctrine, since both built to the identical 18.83mm, so this was a supply-chain quarrel wearing the costume of a schism rather than a war over belief.[1] And instead of one side prevailing, the two societies reconciled and merged, even as the compromised OO standard they both reject went on quietly ruling the wider hobby it had grown out of.[7][9]
