The ocean that glows white for weeks
On a dark sea, with no moon and no coast for hundreds of miles, sailors have now and then watched the water around them turn a soft, even white, as though the ship were crossing a field of snow that ran to every horizon.[5] The sight is called a milky sea, and unlike the blue sparks that scatter off a bow wave, it does not flash or die away with the swell. It simply burns, steadily and without pause, sometimes for weeks.[2]
The glow comes from bacteria, most likely a luminous species called Vibrio harveyi, which give off a continuous light rather than the brief flash the tiny drifting organisms make when a wave breaks over them.[2] A single one of these bacteria is far too faint to see. They switch on their light only in chorus, once a patch of water holds them at an enormous density, on the order of a hundred million cells in every millilitre, a trick of coordination biologists call quorum sensing.[2] The leading idea is that the bacteria ride a bloom of microscopic algae spread across the surface, colonising it until the whole raft begins to shine.[5]
Almost everything known from the water itself comes from a single lucky sample. The research vessel Lima crossed a milky sea in the Arabian Sea off the Horn of Africa in 1985 and scooped up a jar of the glowing water, which turned out to hold algae coated in luminous bacteria.[5][2] No research ship has managed to reach one since, which is why for a long time the phenomenon lived more in ships' logs than in any laboratory.[3]
The satellites learned to look next. A team led by Steven Miller pulled a faint, three-night smudge out of low-light military weather imagery in 2005 and matched it to a milky sea that had bloomed off Somalia a decade earlier, a glowing patch of roughly fifteen thousand square kilometres, about the area of Connecticut.[1] Newer sensors did better still. A day-night camera aboard a weather satellite has since catalogued a dozen milky seas between 2012 and 2021, the largest of them south of Java in 2019, a luminous sheet close to a hundred thousand square kilometres, roughly the size of Iceland, that held its glow for something like forty-five nights.[2]
The proof that the satellites were seeing something real came from a yacht. The crew of the Ganesha sailed for hours through the Java event in 2019, describing a sea gone the white of glow-in-the-dark stars, and their account was later matched to the satellite's record of that same night.[4] Encouraged, Miller and a colleague have since gathered some two hundred and forty credible sightings reaching back about four centuries, most of them from old mariners' logs, in the hope of forecasting the next milky sea and finally steering a ship into one.[3] The novelist Jules Verne had already sent the Nautilus across one, through what he called a sea of milk, long before anyone could say what lit it.

The chalk horse that would vanish without us
Cut into a green Oxfordshire hillside, a horse roughly a hundred and ten metres long runs flat out across the chalk, its body pared to a few flowing lines, a raised leg, a streaming tail and a single round eye.[1] It is the oldest hill figure in Britain and the only one that can be dated with any confidence to prehistory, and it has been galloping there, by the best reckoning, for some three thousand years.[3]
The figure is not bare rock but a set of trenches, in places close to a metre deep, dug into the turf and packed with crushed white chalk that must be renewed to stay bright.[4] The people who first cut it worked with picks of red-deer antler and their hands.[4] Pinning down its age took a modern method called optically stimulated luminescence, which measures how long buried grains of quartz have been hidden from sunlight, and when Simon Palmer and David Miles of the Oxford Archaeological Unit applied it in the 1990s the answer came back in the late Bronze Age, somewhere between about 1380 and 550 BC.[3]
What makes the horse remarkable is not only its age but that it should have survived at all. A chalk figure left to itself grasses over within a decade or two, and the archaeologists who study this one reckon it owes its life to perhaps a hundred generations of local people who kept coming back to clean it.[2] By long custom the whole neighbourhood would gather to scour it about once every seven years, an event that swelled into a hilltop fair of games and stalls, still large enough in the 1850s that one scouring drew a crowd put at thirty thousand.[3] Thomas Hughes, who grew up in its shadow, made that festival the subject of a book in 1859.[3]

The upkeep still falls to volunteers. Under the National Trust, which now looks after the hill, people arrive on appointed days, are handed a bucket of chalk and a hammer, and spend their turn on their knees tamping fresh white rubble into the trenches.[4] The care is not merely ceremonial. A drone survey in 2022 found the lines had thinned by about two-fifths over some forty years, the head and neck worn to less than half their proper width, which prompted a fuller restoration in 2024.[2] Why Bronze Age people cut a horse into the hill in the first place is the one thing all this labour cannot recover; the guesses run from a tribal emblem to a horse of the sun galloping across the down, though even the archaeologist who makes the solar case offers it as an argument rather than a settled fact.[5]

The whale-gut treasure worth more than gold
A grey, waxy lump the size of a loaf, washed up in the tideline among the weed and the plastic, can be worth more than its weight in gold.[3] It is ambergris, and it begins its life in the gut of a sperm whale as something no one would stoop to touch, a black and greasy mass that smells frankly of the farmyard, and only years adrift at sea turn it into treasure.[1]
The whale makes it, most likely, to protect itself. Sperm whales eat squid by the thousand and cannot digest the hard, parrot-like beaks, and the going theory is that ambergris builds up as a waxy shield around that indigestible litter, easing its passage through the gut.[1] How the lump finally leaves the animal is still argued over, whether it is brought back up, passed the other way, or freed only when the whale dies.[1] However it escapes, it is rare, and by common estimate only about one sperm whale in a hundred yields any at all.[4]
The transformation is the sea's own doing. Fresh ambergris is foul and soft, but months and years of sun, salt and air harden it and burn off the stink, leaving a sweet, musky, oddly marine smell built around a nearly odourless compound called ambrein.[2] Slow oxidation breaks that compound down into the molecules perfumers actually chase, chief among them one called ambroxide, and a trace of dissolved ambergris will hold a scent to the skin for hours and lend it depth.[2] It steadied the great perfumes of the last century, Chanel No. 5 and Guerlain's Shalimar among them, though most houses now reach instead for a laboratory-made copy of that same molecule.[1][3]

Because it can simply be found, ambergris throws up windfalls of a kind almost nothing else does. A lump of about a kilo picked up on a Welsh beach sold at auction for eleven thousand pounds, and a Thai fisherman who hauled home some thirty kilos of it was told his find might be worth more than a million dollars.[6][5] The catch is that a treasure this valuable sits in a legal thicket. In the United States it may not be bought or sold at all, since the sperm whale is a protected species and its parts are barred from trade, while in Britain and much of Europe a lump found on the sand is fair game, on the reasoning that no whale was harmed to make it.[3][6] Even the name carries the confusion, coming from the old French for grey amber, forever mistaken for the golden fossil resin it has nothing to do with.[4]
