The glass flowers that have not wilted in a hundred years
In a gallery at Harvard stands a bank of flowering plants that have not wilted in more than a century, because every petal, leaf, and root hair of them is glass.[1] They are so exact that botany students once studied them in place of living specimens, and visitors still lean in close, half-convinced someone has smuggled real blooms into the case.[2]
The flowers were the work of two men, Leopold Blaschka and his son Rudolf, glassworkers from northern Bohemia who kept a studio near Dresden.[7] The family trade was glass, worked for generations, and Leopold began by making jewelry and glass eyes before he ever bent it into a flower.[9] Neither man was a self-taught natural; the skill was inherited down the family and sharpened by long observation.[9]
Their first great subject was not flowers but the sea. Soft-bodied animals like jellyfish and anemones are almost impossible to keep, since they lose their color and slump into shapeless matter once they are lifted from the water and dropped into a jar of alcohol.[4] A museum that wanted to show students a living anemone had, in the years before cameras could work underwater, very little to put in front of them. The Blaschkas filled that gap, modeling marine invertebrates in glass and selling them by mail-order catalog to museums and universities around the world.[6] Harvard bought a large set of its own,[3] and across roughly three decades the pair turned out thousands of models; a single catalog from 1878 listed around six hundred, from anemones and jellyfish to octopuses, priced anywhere from a few cents to a few dollars each.[6] Whole collections survive elsewhere too, among the largest of them at Cornell.[6]

The flowers came later, and by invitation. George Lincoln Goodale, who had founded Harvard’s botanical museum, wanted lifelike models of plants for teaching, and in 1886 he talked the Blaschkas into trying.[1] Two Boston women, Elizabeth Ware and her daughter Mary Lee Ware, paid for the work and gave it to Harvard as a memorial,[2] and their patronage eventually bought the pair’s whole attention: from 1890 the Blaschkas made glass flowers for Harvard and for no one else.[1] The commission ran for half a century and closed only in 1936, by which time it held around 4,300 models representing some 780 species of plant.[2]
What looks like sorcery was, up close, patient craft. The Blaschkas worked by lampwork, softening rods and tubes of glass in a flame and then shaping the hot glass,[7] coloring it with a mix of tinted glass and paint, sometimes over a hidden wire.[2] They left few notes and took no apprentices, and Rudolf, who had no children, worked nearly until his death in 1939, so the specific knowledge seemed to go into the ground with him.[9] Yet when the Corning Museum of Glass analyzed fragments of their work, the glass proved to be ordinary soft glass, close to what is sold today, with no secret formula at all.[5] Harvard’s own glass restorer has said plainly that the Blaschkas used the same techniques he was trained in.[8] The wonder was never really in the material. It was in the hands.

Number stations, the shortwave voices reading code into the dark
Turn an ordinary shortwave radio across the right band at the right hour and you may still find a voice reading numbers, calm and unhurried, in groups of five, to no one it will ever name.[1] The broadcasts are decades old, they carry no advertisements and no station identification, and the most credible explanation for them is also the strangest, which is that they are messages to spies.[1]
The method is old tradecraft, and the logic of it is neat. A shortwave signal bounces off the upper atmosphere and carries for thousands of miles, so a single transmitter can reach an operative anywhere on earth.[1] To catch it, an agent needs nothing more incriminating than a household radio; there is no reply, no phone record, nothing to say who was listening or from where.[1] The numbers themselves are enciphered with a one-time pad, a page of truly random digits added to the message and held by only the sender and the recipient. Used as intended, once and then destroyed, such a cipher cannot be broken, which is why a string of spoken figures can go out over the open air and still keep its secret.[1]
For a long time all of this was inference, until a court case made it plain. In 1998 the United States prosecuted a Cuban spy ring in Florida, and the government showed that its agents had been taking instructions from a station known by its Spanish opening word, Atención, which read numbers over the shortwave.[2] The FBI had quietly copied the decryption program from an operative’s apartment and read the traffic; among the decoded messages were routine housekeeping notes and an instruction about which flights to stay off.[2] It was a numbers station caught doing exactly what listeners had long suspected of the whole phenomenon.[1]
Most stations were never confirmed so cleanly, and the enthusiasts who log them trade in careful, hedged attribution.[4] One English signal, nicknamed the Lincolnshire Poacher for the folk tune that announced it, read its five-figure groups in a clipped English voice and is widely thought to have been British, broadcast from a base on Cyprus until it fell silent in 2008.[4] Another, remembered for a music-box melody and an eerie child-like voice, has been tied through declassified files to Polish intelligence.[4] A Russian channel on 4625 kilohertz, known to listeners as the Buzzer, has droned a single monotonous tone around the clock since at least the 1980s, breaking now and then for a few clipped words in Russian; it is still transmitting, and its purpose has never been officially explained.[4]
The stations slipped into wider notice in 1997, when a small British label gathered years of these recordings into a four-disc set called The Conet Project, an unsettling archive of counting voices and interval tunes that a rock band later sampled and was sued over.[3] What is odd is not that such broadcasts existed during the Cold War, but that they outlived it. In an age of encrypted phones a one-way voice on the shortwave still holds one advantage nothing newer can match: the person receiving it leaves no trace at all.[1]

The Darvaza crater, and the fire that was supposed to burn off in weeks
In the middle of the Karakum desert of Turkmenistan, a pit of fire about seventy meters across has burned without pause for roughly half a century, its floor a bed of small flames that glow through the night and draw the occasional tourist to one of the most closed countries on earth.[1] Outsiders call it the Gates of Hell; the government, less fond of the nickname, has taken to calling it the Shining of Karakum.[6]

The story everyone tells about how it started is tidy, and probably too tidy. In the version repeated on every tour, Soviet geologists drilling for gas in 1971 struck a hidden cavern, the ground gave way and swallowed their rig, and the crew set the escaping gas alight expecting it to burn off within weeks.[1] The trouble is that almost none of this is documented; the records are missing, classified, or were simply never kept, and Turkmen geologists have offered a different account in which the ground collapsed back in the 1960s and the gas was not lit until years afterward.[2] Even the famous date is uncertain.
What is not in doubt is why the fire refuses to go out. The crater sits directly over one of the largest natural-gas fields on earth, in a country that holds some of the biggest reserves anywhere, and gas seeps up into the pit about as fast as it can burn.[6] A blaze that engineers expected to last a few weeks has instead lasted decades, because no one grasped how much fuel lay beneath it.[1] That same abundance makes it a liability as much as a spectacle: the pit is in effect a wasted gas well venting a potent greenhouse gas, and the country is a major source of leaked methane.[4]
Only one person is known to have stood on the crater floor. In November 2013 the Canadian explorer George Kourounis was lowered in on heat-resistant rope in an aluminized suit, on an expedition backed by the National Geographic Society, to scoop up soil and test whether anything could live there; the descent earned a Guinness World Record.[5] He described a coliseum of fire that roared like a jet engine, and the samples he carried back reportedly held bacteria thriving on the hot ground that were absent from the sand outside the pit.[2]
Turkmenistan has been trying to close the Gates for years. Its president ordered officials to close the crater in 2022, citing the gas going to waste, the harm to nearby residents, and the damage to the environment.[3] The state gas company has since drilled wells around the pit to draw the fuel away, and in 2025 one of its researchers reported that the burning had fallen roughly threefold, leaving only a faint glow where flames once lit the desert for miles.[4] After fifty years, the fire that was meant to burn off in weeks may finally be running low.
